Under the Stars

One of the great things about Norfolk (trust are, there are many!) are the enormous skies. It doesn't matter whether you've lived here your whole life or you've just popped by for a visit, its the thing you just never stop noticing.

Its a running joke about how flat Norfolk is (there are some hills i promise and you will definitely notice them if out cycling!) but its the flatness that shows off the vast skies best.

The really come into their own here from dusk when you can see owls and bats swooping over the camp, but its when it gets really dark that they shine.

Sitting around the fire pit, wrapped up in a blanket and watching the skies brings instant relaxation and some unexpected benefits;

Invariably you notice more of what is around you, whether its birds calling or wind rustling leaves on the trees, giving you a greater connection to the nature.

Watching the skies also brings a stillness, and with it calm. All the sounds of life around you fade away, never mind a trip to a spa, stargazing is free and brings an enormous sense of relaxation.

Scientific research also offers another reason to love the enormous skies that takes your breath away.

Experiencing feelings of awe in the outdoors, inspires us to be more generous, make more moral choices and focus on others rather than ourselves.

Paul Piff, a social psychologist at the University of California at Irvine, published his research in a 2015. In his study, he found that people who had awe-inducing experiences were more helpful, generous and ethical.  This is ''The small self” perspective. People are often so focused on their own interests, and the small self represents the alternative to that: less important and less entitled, with the feeling that you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

And finally, stargazing really is one of natures ways of reminding us that even at times of darkness, light persists.
